Bio means \u201cbiology\u201d and resource means as is \u201cresource\u201d. In other words, it is called \u201cbiological resources\u201d.<\/p>\r\n  <p>The basic mechanisms of life are common to many organisms. We are conducting research on the causes and treatment of diseases using experimental animals as models. The functions of plants and microorganisms are used to solve food and environmental problems and improve our health.<\/p>\r\n  <figure class=\"_flex\">\r\n    <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/web.brc.riken.jp\/ja\/wp-content\/uploads\/images\/bioresource_resource.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"682\" height=\"190\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-5906\" \/>\r\n  <\/figure>\r\n<\/section>\r\n<section class=\"chapter\">\r\n  <h4 class=\"middleheading\">If there is no bioresource &#8230;<\/h4>\r\n  <p>\r\n      There are many problems surrounding our lives, such as illness and food shortages. To solve these problems, life science research is needed. Various bioresources are used in research and development. Without bioresources, they cannot conduct researches of diseases or drug development. Issues on the environment, energy and food that support our lives would remain unsolved. In addition, bioresources are necessary for a research on health and production of proper amount of food.\r\n    <\/p>\r\n  <\/section>\r\n  \r\n  <section class=\"chapter\">\r\n    <h4 class=\"middleheading\">\r\n      Because there is bioresource, it becomes possible!\r\n    <\/h4>\r\n    <p>\r\n      Bioresources support the development of life sciences and bio industry. The results of many studies using bioresources, from basic research to the development of new drugs, have helped our lives.\r\n    <\/p>\r\n  <\/section>\r\n  \r\n  <section class=\"chapter _clearboth\">\r\n    <h4 class=\"middleheading\">Understanding disease \/ Making drugs<\/h4>\r\n    <figure>\r\n      <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/web.brc.riken.jp\/ja\/wp-content\/uploads\/images\/bioresource_resource_medicine.jpg\" alt=\"picture of drugs\" height=\"179\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-5617 _floatright _margin-left-bottom-1rem\" \/>\r\n    <\/figure>\r\n    <p>For basic studies of causes and treatments of human disease, experimental animals such as mice, and human and animal cells cultured in test tubes are used. Comparing sick animals with healthy animals can help our understanding of the cause of the diseases. Furthermore, if you find genes and proteins related to diseases and find their functions, it makes possible to develop drugs for the diseases. Bioresources such as experimental animals and cells of human and animal origin are indispensable for preliminary tests of the effects of drugs and treatments.<\/p>\r\n  <\/section>\r\n  \r\n  <section class=\"chapter\">\r\n    <h4 class=\"middleheading\">Discovery of new treatments<\/h4>\r\n    <p>\r\n      Recently, realization of regenerative medicine using iPS cells and ES cells is expected. Regenerative medicine is a treatment that restores tissues and organs and their functions that have been lost due to disease or injury. Using iPS cells and ES cells not only enables regenerative medicine, but also contribute to develop a treatment of intractable diseases and development of new drugs with fewer side effects. These have been attracting attention to bioresources because they are key to the realization of next-generation treatment after surgery and medication.\r\n    <\/p>\r\n  <\/section>\r\n  \r\n  <section class=\"chapter _clearboth\">\r\n    <h4 class=\"middleheading\">For healthy life<\/h4>\r\n    <figure>\r\n      <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/web.brc.riken.jp\/ja\/wp-content\/uploads\/images\/bioresource_resource_oldcouple.png\" alt=\"picture of healthy elderly couple\" height=\"178\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-5618 _floatright _margin-left-bottom-1rem\" \/>\r\n    <\/figure>\r\n    <p>\r\n      Microorganisms contribute to health promotion. Multiple researches are underway to discover and utilize the various functions of microorganisms. Enterobacteria have been reported to be closely associated with colorectal cancer, allergies, and obesity. Elucidating the functions of intestinal bacteria may help prevent diseases and aging. In addition, the results of prevention of obesity and dental caries using yogurt lactic acid bacteria have been patented.\r\n    <\/p>\r\n  <\/section>\r\n  \r\n  <section class=\"chapter\">\r\n    <h4 class=\"middleheading\">To solve food problems<\/h4>\r\n    <p>\r\n      Due to population growth and climate change, food shortages are predicted in near future. If you can harvest enough amount of crops and make crops that are resistant to drought and warm weather, they may strongly contribute to solve the food problem. Previous studies have shown that crop properties are determined by genetic information. Therefore, research on the genes of experimental plants such as <i>Arabidopsis thaliana<\/i> is being conducted to find tips for breeding excellent crops.\r\n    <\/p>\r\n  <\/section>\r\n  \r\n  <section class=\"chapter\">\r\n    <h4 class=\"middleheading\">To solve environmental problems<\/h4>\r\n    <p>\r\n      Active use of bioresources such as plants and microorganisms are hoped to solve environmental problems. Research is underway to produce fuel by fermenting rice straw and energy by dissolving garbage. Energy produced from plants and microorganisms is renewable and is hoped to help prevent global warming.\r\n    <\/p>\r\n  <\/section>\r\n  \r\n  <section class=\"chapter _clearboth\">\r\n    <h4 class=\"middleheading\">To solve the mysteries of life<\/h4>\r\n    <p>\r\n      Bioresources are essential for solving the mysteries of life, such as elucidating the mechanism of human ontogeny and evolution. The mystery of life has been revealed one after another by reading and classifying meaningful information from a vast amount of genetic information or by examining the functions of genes in various model organisms. Bioresources have brought many discoveries so far.\r\n    <\/p>\r\n\r\n<!--\u30b3\u30e1\u30f3\u30c8\u30a2\u30a6\u30c8\u3053\u3053\u304b\u3089\r\n    <p>\r\n      The RIKEN BioResource Research Center collects and distributes the following five important bioresources.\r\n    <\/p>\r\n  \r\n    <figure>\r\n      <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/web.brc.riken.jp\/ja\/wp-content\/uploads\/images\/bioresource-resource-art6.png\" alt=\"picture of mouse\" height=\"157\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-5619 _floatright _margin-left-bottom-1rem\" \/>\r\n    <\/figure>\r\n    <p>\r\n      <em>Mouse:<\/em>\r\n      <br \/>\r\n      A scientific name is \"Mus musculus\". Because it is small, easy to breed and grows rapidly in mammals, mouse is used as a model animal for many medical studies. Since 99% of genes in mouse are the same as humans, it helps to investigate how human genes work and the relationships between genes and diseases.\r\n    <\/p>\r\n  \r\n    <section class=\"chapter _clearboth\">\r\n      <figure>\r\n        <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/web.brc.riken.jp\/ja\/wp-content\/uploads\/images\/bioresource-resource-art7.png\" alt=\"picture of Arabidopsis\" height=\"156\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-5620 _floatright _margin-left-bottom-1rem\" \/>\r\n      <\/figure>\r\n      <p>\r\n        <em>Arabidopsis:<\/em>\r\n        <br \/>\r\n        Easy to grow in the laboratory, grows quickly and the seed can be harvested in 2 months. The number of genes is small and basic functions of most genes are already known. It is used all over the world as an experimental plant and the results are applied to other plants.\r\n      <\/p>\r\n    <\/section>\r\n  \r\n    <section class=\"chapter _clearboth\">\r\n      <figure>\r\n        <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/web.brc.riken.jp\/ja\/wp-content\/uploads\/images\/bioresource-resource-art8.png\" alt=\"picture of Cultured cells\" height=\"210\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-5621 _floatright _margin-left-bottom-1rem\" \/>\r\n      <\/figure>\r\n      <p>\r\n        <em>Cultured cells:<\/em>\r\n        <br \/>\r\n        Living organisms are made up of various cells with various shapes and functions. Examining cell functions greatly contribute to the elucidation of the mechanisms of life. Gene is a blueprint for a life program that is inherited from parent to child. Yeasts that are closely involved in our lives and used for fermented foods. Furthermore pathogenic bacteria are also microorganisms. It is also used in the development of new drugs, and the hidden power of microorganisms is attracting much attention.\r\n      <\/p>\r\n    <\/section>\r\n  \r\n    <section class=\"chapter\">\r\n      <h4 class=\"middleheading\">Bioresources that support our future<\/h4>\r\n      <p>\r\n        The various bioresources currently in use are important \u201cbioresources\u201d developed by previous researches. Researchers around the world are using bioresource to produce new research results. Along with bioresources, life science research will continue with the aim of realizing a healthy and prosperous life.
